Tourism in Ibiza
Ibiza is known throughout the world as a modern party island. However, the magic of Ibiza has been around since depths of time. A mystical island with megalithic structures that can be traced back to more than twenty centuries BC, Ibiza has always been a destination for various cultures and civilisations. For this reason, the characteristic that best defines it is one of cosmopolitanism.
It has been such since ancient times, when Carthaginians, Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Muslims and Christians were successive visitors to this idyllic place.
Its 170 km of coastline is an invitation for water sports fans, as are the tranquil beaches that offer a view of unforgettable sunsets. A jewel such as this has always been coveted, thus being a target for pirates and buccaneers. In spite of this, the island was protected thanks to similar figures, like the Corsairs.
Ibiza can boast about being the only island in the world that has enjoyed Corsair protection, something attested by the Monumento a los Corsarios (Monument to the Corsairs) at the port. The Ibizan Corsair ships, or jabeques dominated the waters of the Mediterranean between the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century.
