San José. Village

San Jose (also known as Sant Josep de sa Talaia) is an Ibicenco village and the county seat of the municipality that bears its name. The epithet added to its name is due to the fact that the highest hill on Ibiza, sa Talaia (475 metres), is found within its territory. The town centre is very small, as in all of Ibiza’s villages, since, according to timeless custom, houses are scattered across the countryside, not concentrated in towns. It is true, however, that San Jose has grown in the past years as a result of tourism, but it has fully retained the sleepy rural charm that has become its defining characteristic. Its church dates back to 1726 and, like other churches on the island, served as a defense site and peasant refuge against pirate attacks. The village has a good selection of bars, shops and terraces.
